The brief for this interior project was straightforward: reuse their existing pieces of furniture and find a way to incorporate all the art, souvenirs and knick knacks collected from the extensive travels of the couple. The first concern for the space was the lack of light in the living-dining area. This was overcome by removing the kitchen wall and the inclusion of the small dining balcony into the space. This resulted in the hall, dining and kitchen becoming one cohesive communal space. The introduction of the large wood and glass pivoted windows brought in the much needed light while becoming the main design element in the space. Several of the bespoke furniture pieces made by us are inspired by their travels, the laser-cut pattern in the foyer and living was inspired by a detail from a monastery in Myanmar. The sliding shutters and doors in the light drenched master bedroom are custom made using tapestries, lacework and glass. The bed inlaid with tiles is reminiscent of Spain. A custom bar cabinet was designed for the client inspired by his passion for travel and adventure and the person who kindled this wanderlust spirit in him as a child, Tintin. We experimented with metal and fabricated a simple geometric side table for their son with a secret worth trying to unfold. This blend of refurbished old inherited furniture and new designed pieces, an assembly of life and memory creates a relevant, present design identity that defies the trappings of style and genre.
